Why not try a very different type of sport this year?
If you look through our calendar which links to the activities which are planned. you will notice the wide range of options available to anyone interested in the sport. We cater for fencers who are among the best in the country, to children of 6, enjoying the pure romanticism of sword-fighting. There is nothing quite like the sound of the clash of blades and the swoosh through the air! This is as appealing to our national champion, as it is to the beginner. We base our school on these values: fencing for the sheer enjoyment of the "dual", as well as holding the traditions of fencing, such as honour and integrity, as paramount.
Another value we hold high, although we are an individual sport, is team-work. You need a willing, and like-minded partner to enjoy the sport, and therefore we need to appreciate those with whom we train and at times, compete. A group has "gel" or it doesn't work for anyone. Although, we try to be as all-embracing as possible, it is important for students to follow certain guidelines for behaviour because they help to make a group function. There are more details on the principles of the school, and some background on David Wagenfeld, the coach, on this page.
We're working at getting a proper administrative structure established last year, so that we are able to properly support the school and its students, in striving to become the best they can possibly be. We operate as a group of clubs which work together, and from which a "squad" of the top students is drawn for additional training. Our community page shows the various components and leaders of En Garde.
We offer fencing classes for groups of various age-groups and levels all over the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. Practises are held during school terms, except for the adult group of Peninsula Swords which meets during part of the holidays as well.
Our headquarters is based at Jion Martial Arts studio at the corner of Rosmead and Wetton roads. Advanced junior fencers and adults make use of these fantastic facilities. The shop is open during our practices, as well as during office hours.
COST for first-time fencers: R220 for the term
Beginners need not join a club, or get any equipment.
